Finca Santa Lucia is a fifteen acre coffee farm located in the Meseta Central (Central Valley) area of Costa Rica. Our farm is north of Grecia in the small village of San Miguel Arriba. We are on the south face of Volcan Poas at an altitude of about 5,000 feet.
Finca Santa Lucia is named for the santa lucia, a beautiful blue wildflower that blooms on our farm during the harvest. It is customary in Costa Rica for friends to exchange santa lucia and carry it in their wallets to assure good fortune all year.
Our family bought the farm in 2005 from the family who had owned it for generations. In the years preceding our purchase the coffee had been unattended, necessitating that we pull out the old coffee and replant. Because better tasting coffee is shade grown, we also planted approximately 2,000 shade trees, including banana, plantain, puró (the most common shade tree for coffee in Costa Rica), durazno, sweet and sour lemon, mango and avocado.
Today Finca Santa Lucia is a lush, beautiful farm producing superb coffee as well as luscious tropical fruits and vegetables.
We grow Caturra, Catauí, and Bourbon varieties of Arabica coffee using techniques from a generation ago, before farmers cut the shade trees and began using chemical fertilizers. Our coffee is grown in rich volcanic soil, without pesticides or herbicides. The coffee is handpicked, wet milled and sun dried without the use of air blowers.
Our farm employs three workers full time and three or four more when we cut weeds and harvest. Planting, weeding, pruning and harvesting are done according to the lunar cycle.
We strive to incorporate our animals, trees, coffee plants and vegetables into a healthy ecosystem that nourishes itself.
Our harvest yield will increase as the young plants mature, reaching full production of 20,000 pounds in 2013.
Most of our coffee is sold green (unroasted) in Costa Rica for export on the boutique international coffee market.
We bring a small amount each year to our home in New Mexico to be roasted in small batches by Corrales Coffee Roasters. Over time we have determined the perfect roast for our coffee – probably considered a medium roast. Coffees from Costa Rica are considered “bright” (not bitter) and therefore respond better to a medium roast.
We offer our roasted coffee for sale in one pound bags.
The right growing, harvesting, and processing techniques coupled with the right roasting results in exceptional coffee. Our coffee has cupped at 87 points, which gives it an “excellent” ranking.
For patrons of coffee excellence, we offer a single farm, unblended coffee - from our farm to you.
